Troubleshooting the Receipt Printer and Cash Drawer

Updated on

Tired of waiting on hold? In a hurry to fix your receipt printer? Some common issues with the printer can be resolved by checking a few simple things.

Power Switch

The most common issue with the receipt printer is that it's not printing a receipt. This can be caused by a couple of things.

  • First confirm that the receipt printed is plugged in and powered on. If the printer is plugged in but the green light on the top of the printer isn't turning on, try flipping the power switch on the front of the printer.

Power Connection

If you still have power issues with the printer, we will want to check a couple of other things.

  • Is it plugged in? Confirm that the power cord is plugged into a wall outlet or surge protector as well as into the back of the printer itself.
  • Confirm all cord connections are secure. The outlet, back of the printer, and the power brick itself.

After you've confirmed all the connections, try flipping the switch again. The green light on the top of the printer should now be lit.

Error Lights

The amber or yellow error light will turn on for one of two reasons:

  • The printer is running low or out of paper. Your facility should have extra receipt paper rolls on hand to replace as needed. First get a new roll of receipt paper. Then press the grey button on the top of the printer to open the latch. Finally, load the paper into the printer following the diagram located inside the printer.
  • The printer is jammed or loaded incorrectly. To clear a jam, press the grey button to open the latch, then clear the jam from the feeder. After closing the printer, press the feed button located above the grey button you pressed to open the latch. The paper should smoothly dispense. If the paper is getting caught again, open the latch and clear the jam. Confirm that the paper is loaded correctly by referencing the diagram inside the latch of the printer.

PC Connection

Last but certainly not least, is confirming that the receipt printer is securely plugged into the PC. To confirm this, we'll follow the USB cord from the back of the printer to the computer and double check that it is securely plugged into each. If this cord isn't plugged in, no receipt will print and the cash drawer won't open while processing sales.
