How to Install or Update the Progress OpenEdge ODBC Driver for RecTrac Access

Updated on

This article provides step-by-step instructions for installing or updating the Progress OpenEdge ODBC (Open Database Connectivity) driver to connect to the RecTrac database. An ODBC connection allows authorized reporting tools to securely communicate with the RecTrac database.

This process replaces any previous methods involving shared drive access. Always download the latest version directly from VSI to ensure compatibility.

Notify ITS (if applicable) and Install FileZilla

If you received an email from Vermont Systems (VSI) announcing a driver update, forward it to [email protected] before beginning. This helps ensure they’re aware of the update and can monitor any downstream effects.

If you’re setting up a new machine for the first time and no update email was received, you can skip this step.

Next, download and install FileZilla Client to access the VSI SFTP server: https://filezilla-project.org/download.php?type=client

SFTP (Secure File Transfer Protocol) is a secure way to connect to another organization’s server and download files over an encrypted connection.

Download the Progress OpenEdge ODBC Driver from VSI

Before installing the driver, you’ll need to download the installer from the Vermont Systems (VSI) SFTP server using FileZilla.

  1. On your desktop or in your Downloads folder, create a new empty folder. Name it something like 'ODBC Driver 12.8'.
  2. Open FileZilla. At the top of the window, fill in the connection fields:
    • Host: sftp.vermontsystems.com
    • Username: vsiftp
    • Password: Get this from the VSI support site (VSI login required)
  3. Click Quickconnect. Once connected, look at the right-hand panel in FileZilla. This shows the files and folders on the VSI server.
  4. Navigate through the folders in this order: Files Updates And Drivers > Progress > ODBC.
  5. In that folder, find the file named "PROGRESS_OE_12.8_WIN_64_SQLCLIENTACCESS.zip".
  6. Drag this file from the right panel (VSI server) to the left panel, and drop it into the folder you created in Step 1.

Install the Progress OpenEdge ODBC Driver

Once you’ve downloaded the ZIP file, follow these steps to install the driver on your computer:

  1. Go to the folder where you saved the ZIP file. Right-click the file and select Extract All. Choose the folder you created earlier and complete the extraction.
  2. Open the extracted folder and find a folder named "Progress". Inside that folder, locate the file named "Setup.exe".
  3. Right-click Setup.exe and choose Run As Administrator. If any error messages appear during the install, click OK or Continue until the installer proceeds.
  4. When prompted, enter the following license details:
  1. Accept all default options and click Next or Install when prompted. When the installer finishes, click Finish to close the setup.
  2. In the folder where you extracted the driver ZIP file, locate the .pem file. It is usually named something like: VS_ODBC_SSL01.pem.
  3. Create a new folder at the root of your C: drive called "VS13". Move the .pem file into the C:\VSI3 folder.

Configure the ODBC Connection

  1. Press Windows Key + S on your keyboard to open the search bar. Search for the following: ODBC Data Sources (64-bit)
  2. Click the result to open the ODBC Data Source Administrator. Be sure to open the 64-bit version. The Progress driver will not appear in the 32-bit version.
  3. In the ODBC Data Source Administrator window, go to the System DSN tab, then click Add.
  4. Select Progress OpenEdge 12.8 driver from the list and click Finish.
  5. When the configuration window appears, enter the following:
    • Data Source Name: Prince George ODBC
    • Description: Prince George RecTrac
    • Host Name: odbc3.myvscloud.com
    • Port Number: 11263
    • Database Name: mdpgparks
    • User ID: mdpgparksodbc@vsi
  6. Click Apply.

Set Security Settings and Test the Connection

  1. Click the Security tab
  2. Ensure that the Encryption Method is set to 1 - SSL.
  3. For the Truststore path, enter the location of the .pem file you moved earlier: it should be something like C:\VSI3\VS_ODBC_SSL01.pem.
  4. Click Test Connect.
  5. When prompted, enter the password: aFpdiyZxzp
  6. Click OK. If the connection is successful, you'll receive a confirmation message. Click OK on the message then OK again to save and close the setup.

Finalize the Server Connection (Report Server Only)

If you are installing or updating the ODBC driver on the report server, complete the following steps to ensure automated reporting continues to function:

  1. Open the Report Server Configuration Manager on the reports server.
  2. Log in using the AutomatedReports account. Password not included in this guide, please contact your supervisor or ITS if needed.
  3. After logging in, the SQL Server Agent services should restart automatically.
  4. Check the Results window to confirm the services restarted successfully.

This step is critical for ensuring that scheduled reports (including batch over/shorts) resume correctly.
